Share Can Your Child Go To Harvard? Part 2
2017-7-7 22:22
Not only was I super impressed with what Victoria has accomplished, but, I found others here in Henan that were impressive. When I first came to China in 2011, I intended to work together with a prominent educational company in order to create a new system for teaching English. I'd been somewhat of a spokesperson for Rosetta Stone, the number one language learning program in America. My endorsement of their system was on the back cover of every SkyMall magazine on every commercial airline in ...

Share China's Transformative Innovations
2017-7-7 15:45
I first came to China on August 25, 2011. I've carefully watched China transform over the past 6 years. It has been amazing to see the innovation in technology and business. With the opening up in the late 1970s due to the vision and courage of Deng Xiaoping, China turned a corner toward what it is today. I was recently in the thriving metropolis of Shanghai. After arriving there and finding my way to my hotel, I checked in just before midnight. I was exhausted and barely able ...

Share Why Foreign Teachers MUST Have Patience And Be Tough
2017-7-7 14:53
I've survived in China for the past 6 odd years. I was required to sit out 6 months last year due to a law that isn't enforced in most provinces of China. A law that says that foreigners who have worked here for 5 consecutive years, must leave for 6 months. It is rarely enforced, however, here in Henan, it is. Not a big deal. Just had a nice vacation traveling and relaxing in the USA. There are many requirements of character that a foreign teacher here must possess if they are going to have l ...

Share Can Your Child Go To Harvard? Part 1
2017-6-12 18:33
Victoria (her English name) was just 14 years old. When I met her, she looked older. She certainly acted more mature. She came to the Binhe Park English corner where I taught free lessons every Sunday morning for 3 hours. She always stood in front. She took in everything I said. She took notes on every word that proceeded from my mouth. One day, her mother showed up. I'd seen Victoria there for almost 2 years. I'd never met mom or dad. They asked if they could talk to me. Of course, Victoria' ...

Share Great News For Foreign Teachers
2017-6-12 09:59
Perhaps I should say, 'Great news for foreign teachers who can tolerate the pain of getting their visa.' The visa requirements in China for foreigners is becoming intolerable for many. I hear from young teachers or, teachers who have been in China a short time, the nightmare they are facing getting their visas renewed. The new policies don't make much (or any) sense to us, but, you have to follow them if you're going to stay here in China. Last year almost finished me off as a teacher in ...

Share Chinese Students Don't Need To Cheat
2017-5-17 07:03
I just heard another disturbing report of Chinese students cheating on the TOEFL exam in the USA. Of course, all were arrested and will face criminal charges because, by cheating, they defrauded the U.S. government by breaking visa procurement laws. This follows the recent news of a top government official's son in the U.K. who went to jail for attempting to bribe some of his professors for higher scores.divbr/divdivHere's what I know about Chinese students. I know because I've taught mo ...

Share Misused English Words Part 1
2017-5-13 05:14
Accept vs. Except These two words sound similar but have very different meanings. Accept means to receive something willingly: ???His mom accepted his explanation??? or ???She accepted the gift graciously." Except signifies exclusion: ???I can attend every meeting except the one next week. To help you remember, note that both except and exit begin with ex. Exit means 'to go out.' Share Learning From Life
2017-5-12 08:59
Every situation that you encounter, will teach you valuable lessons about life. You need to observe situations and not just experience them. You need to rationally reflect upon them. Last night, we had a meeting with 5 parents who had shown interest in our classes. We set the time to meet at 6 p.m. All of them except one, were on time. The late parent called 7 times. We didn't answer because we didn't want to disrupt the meeting. I gave a short, informal presentation of our classes. I tal ...

Share Managing People In Your WeChat Group Successfully
2017-5-3 08:02
A lot of people have asked me lately how I manage so many WeChat groups and get my message out to so many people. I'll share a few of the secrets I've found in getting your message out to a lot of people. Presently, I have more than 6,200 people subscribed to my public account and at least 10,000 more in various groups. Some of the groups are my groups. Others are English language learning groups where I've been invited to share my free English lessons. I also create short videos that are viewed ...
